January 16th, Broadway Cigar Club

This is a message from Ruth, a valued member of the Broadway Cigar community:

Welcome to 2013!

We have gotten together on some great ideas on how to enhance our cigar club- so come add your opinion and help decide! We will be voting at this meeting on which of those ideas to implement.

To ring in the new year we are holding this meeting at The Mark. Scotch tasting and education along with our special cigar selection for the evening. Chef Elden Arquette is singling out some special menu items for us for an additional $10 if you like, no obligation.

It is proper etiquette to buy a cigar from the proprietor. In this case it is even more beneficial to do so! The Mark standard offer on Monday- has extended for our members only, a “buy two, get one free cigar ” policy for the evening.

We need a fairly accurate head count on this one so we can reserve enough space! Register that you will be joining us, and bring a friend you want to include. Looking forward to seeing you soon!

The Humidor, A Home For Your Cigars

It’s likely that if you live in the northwest you’re ready to escape the cold and are dreaming about a place that is nice and warm. Guess what, your cigar is too. If you’ve upgraded to a nice stogie, it’s time you also upgrade the way you treat it.

Now we aren’t talking about storing your newest box of classics in your bathroom where it’s humid and toasty. Cigars need a certain level of constant humidity to keep them fresh, delicious and to aid in an even burn. We usually recommend getting a nice humidor and keeping the humidity between 68-74% with a temp of about 65°F. So stop in and we will help you treat your cigars to a nice home.

The Art of Aging

No not all things get better with age, but cigars are one thing that do. Most cigar enthusiasts agree that the process of aging can transform a good cigar experience into a great one. The aging period allows cigars to develop the best characters and flavors that are essential to making an enjoyable ‘gar.

In order to age cigars, they must be put to rest in a humidity controlled environment where they are allowed to mature without being disturbed. The length of time to age a cigar is really up to your personal preference, there are no specific guidelines. Although there is no specific amount of time to age a cigar, the majority of experienced smokers agree that most hand-rolled cigars need to be smoked within a few months of their manufacture or should not be touched until they have aged for at least a year.

The cigars that tend to improve the most with age are the larger ring, full bodied cigars, aging around 3-7 years. Most premium cigars will taste better after aging 1-2 years and some will continue to improve when aged even longer. Top-quality premium cigars will become smoother and more flavorful with age, much like a good wine. Some countries even age stogies for 10 or more years, but it is still debated on whether or not anything aged over 10 years can maintain its flavors or if it is just over aged.

So although you can’t say “it gets better with age” about everything, remember that you can with cigars.

Join The Club

This is a message from Ruth, a valued member of the Broadway Cigar community:

Hello fellow aficionado and BCC member!

Most of you know me, as Ruth or Ruthy.  I have the pleasure of working with Broadway Cigar Company’s Jason and crew for the past couple of years. For the time being I have been asked to help with the Broadway Cigar Club. It is my pleasure to do so! I look forward to getting to know you all,  enjoying a cigar together while we learn a little more about them!

That being said- This is your club and your input is being requested. What activities and things would you like this club to participate in or do? This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of an increasingly rare haven for cigar smokers and make this club something special!

We are entering the holiday season and time constraints make attending some functions difficult.  How do you want to handle club meetings during this time?

Register that you will be joining us for the next club meeting, and please make sure I have your information right.  Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Long ashes!

Aw Shucks, You Got A Bad One

Now that we’ve discussed finding the best possible stick, it’s time to chat about how to decipher if you have a substandard stick. If it’s not already blatantly obvious here are 5 rules on discovering the bad eggs.

1. It’s Dry: A cigar’s wrapper should never be cracked, broken or flawed in any way. If your cigar looks like it’s lost all of it’s oils, it probably has. Throw it out!

2. There’s No Give: Although you want a nicely compacted stick, it shouldn’t feel as hard as Jessica Biel’s bum. If you’ve got a rock for a cigar it’s time to toss it.

3. It Smells Bad: Simply stated, use the same rule as you hopefully do for food, if it has a strange odor, don’t put it anywhere near your mouth.

4. It’s Moldy: Really, this rule should go without stating, but you would be surprised by the questions we get asked. If there is a whitish fungus growing on your stogie, trash it.

5. The Color Looks Off: Has your cigar wrapper taken on a greenish hue? We recommend to get rid of it ASAP before you also take on a greenish hue.

Choosing a Cigar: Lesson 8

Fine wine, vintage cars and, heck, even most of us get better with age. Albeit to a lesser degree, cigars also need their fair share of maturing. Lesson 8 to picking out your stick recommends picking out your stick based on its age.

A Cigar’s Prime

*We are going to preface this recommendation with the fact that most of what we explain here is up for debate.

When settling on your next ‘gar, take into consideration how long the stogie was aged. Most cigars are aged anywhere from 2-10 years. Allowing a cigar some time to mature can provide a smoother burn and draw. However, holding on to if for too long might result in a dry, less flavorful experience. We recommend anywhere from 3-8 years, but some experts claim that a ‘gar is in its after 6-10 years. As always, decide what you prefer and stick with it.

Not sure what you like? Cigar shop Tony recommends a cigar that has been aged for 3 years.
