BCC Cigar Review: La Flor Dominicana Double Press

La Flor Dominicana cigars set a high standard for cigars. La Canela Dominican fillers and Habano wrappers establish a flavorful medium to full bodied smoke that’s sure to linger in your mind long after it lingers on your palate.

The extreme press of this cigar is incredible to behold, perfectly rolled and vein-free. A cold aroma floats with notes of cedar and leather. Upon lighting, there is a powerful introduction to peppery spices. Though the flavors are not overwhelmingly complex, the strength behind this cigar is to be commended.

Through a steady burn and abundant smoke, the flavors subtly shift profiles, promoting characteristics of nuts and coffee. Into the final third, the stick reverted to heavy pepper and cedar with classic tobacco notes, allowing the powerful flavors reach a climactic balance.

If you’re looking for a smoke that packs a punch, this Dominican gem is whispering your name. Get your hands around one at any Broadway Cigar location today.

A reasonably large selection of cigars in a walk in cart. The interior is actually designed to look classic with all wood paneling.” You can check out the rest of the review by clicking here.

BCC Cigar Review: Arturo Fuente Short Story

We know all too well what we can expect from the Spring weather in Portland- Most of the time we can’t tell April from December. We like to imagine that Arturo Fuente had us in mind when he developed the Short Story series. The short, perfecto-shaped stick, which burns in around 30-45 minutes, is the perfect smoke for a quick lunch.

With minimal veins, the wrapper is aesthetically pleasing and the compact construction makes it still more appealing. The exceptionally rolled stick comes to a nicely pointed foot, packed with Dominican tobacco that delivers an easy medium-strength smoke.

A cold draw revealed slight pepper blended delicately with notable sweetness on the palate. The Short Story lit without hesitation and gave way to a razor sharp, light ash that continued to stack tightly. As the stick evolved with each passing minute, dominant profiles of clean tobacco and sweet cocoa emerged. The cigar maintained a perfectly smooth and consistent draw through to the subtle citrus finish.

Although the Short Story is not the most complex of cigars, it is smooth, balanced and consistent. Pick one up at any Broadway Cigar location for the perfect accompaniment to a brief midday break.

BCC Cigar Review: Casa Magna Colorado Diadema

This is it, folks. We’ve been counting down Cigar Aficionado’s Best Cigars of 2011 for quite some time now and today we finish the list. While the magazine continues through 25, we’re wrapping up with their Number 10 smoke, the Casa Magna Colorado Diadema.

While the Casa Magna Colorado series have been successful for years, the Diadema boasts a larger, more elaborate size than the robusto variety. With an oily auburn wrapper, this gorgeous stick showcases the impressive workmanship of the Plasencia Cigar Factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. The cold, leathery aroma precedes an abundance of palpable flavors and introduces the palate to a delectable smoke.

Cigar Aficionado describes the Diadem as “A fat, long stick with a pigtail tip twisted tight against its tapered head, it has a curved bottom that needs just a bit of a clipping to get going.” The torch welcomes notes of earthy and sweet tobacco, that pair perfectly with the aged leather. An impeccable burn encourages the further development of these flavors, giving way to cocoa beans, cedar and spice.

This stick is an exceptional take on the balance of classic flavors that peak with a savory finish. If you haven’t tried one, you ought to. Visit any Broadway Cigar Location and we’ll set you up.

BCC Cigar Review: Warlock Robusto

Well, ladies and gents, we are getting close. This week’s Warlock Robusto ranked Number 9 in Cigar Aficionado’s Best Cigars of 2011. The Warlock brand, although delicious, evolved as an edgy departure for Altadis U.S.A. Its unconventional size was crafted at the Agros Tobacos Industriales factory in Condega, Nicaragua, which is a well-known growing area that produces a more subtle leaf.

The Robusto’s oily chocolate wrapper and occasional fine veins enveloped the length of the stick without blemish. The construction was hard and consistent, with a traditional earthy aroma.  The blend of Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers provide a prelight draw that carried remnants of cocoa and sweet raisins. The tobacco mixture also contributed to a fascinating variety of flavors, as Cigar Aficionado notes, “Warlocks are designed to be strong, and they deliver, with power from the initial puff and a salty, leathery and earthy flavor that ends with notes of wood.”

Warlock Robusto

With a burn that was tauntingly slow, the powerful smoke revealed flavors of roasted nut, and sweet grass. Developing gradually, the earthy notes gave way to chocolate and fleeting hints of creamy nougat. Just before the chocolate and earth flavors returned with a new cedar profile, there was a quick tease of spice and butterscotch.

The Warlock’s unpredictability was exciting against the contrast of the even burn, light, solid ash and comfortable draw; It varied between a candied lighter body and a rich, full smoke, but was consistently appealing.

This is a great smoke for beginners and aficionados alike. Sample one at any Broadway Cigar location today.

BCC Cigar Review: Dominican Punch Double Corona

Cigar Aficionado featured the Punch Double Corona at Number 8 in its list of Best 2011 Cigars. While we don’t carry Cuban cigars in our lounges, we do offer its equally delectable Dominican counterpart.

The Dominican Punch Double Corona, crafted in Honduras, uses an enticingly thick and oily Ecuadorian wrapper. The aesthetic appeal is drawn out further by the firmness of the stick and the pleasantly heavy aroma. This particular stick is one that could be described as hassle-free; The cut was both smooth and clean and the light was quick, producing a solid, light ash.

Domincan Punch Double Corona

Punch’s Connecticut binder melds seamlessly with the Dominican, Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers providing a fully loaded body of flavor. While the prelight draw gave off only gently sweet notes, the first toasted puffs were smoky, rich and flavorful. There was a tastefully balanced presence of coffee, hints of heavy Maduro and sweetness. As the Maduro flavors continued to build, the flavor became fuller and lingered on the palate, leaving behind a bit of mouth-watering spice.

The consistent burn and handsome flavors alone ought to draw you into a stick like this. Come over to any of our three locations and light one of these bad boys up for yourself.

BCC in the Portland Business Journal

One of our favorite things about operating a business in Portland has always been the mutual support of the local community. We are thrilled that our favorite fans, friends and followers have been so taken by our newest location.

Like our other, more traditional locations, the downtown cart provides “ a selection of smoking products and features a walk-in humidor where hundreds of varieties of cigar brands as well as accessories are for sale,” writes Wendy Culverwell of the Portland Business Journal in a writeup that spotlights exactly what we’d hoped the cigar cart would encompass.

BCC Cigar Review: Cabaiguan Guapo

The Cabaiguan Guapo series filled the number seven slot in the List of Best Cigars of 2011 by Cigar Aficionado.

The Tatuaje Cabaiguan Maduro is an aesthetically interesting cigar – Produced in the El Rey factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, it features a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper and Nicaraguan fillers. The maduro wrapper may well be considered more black than brown, and is topped with an immaculate triple cap. The case is surprisingly rugged for a premium label cigar with noticeable veins but free of soft spots and an impeccably formed foot.

Cabaiguan Guapo

The initial aroma of this maduro presents seductive notes of cherry, chocolate and subtle cedar. A traditional pre-light revealed notes of earth and honey, setting the stage for a smooth draw. Upon igniting, the Cabaiguan gives a steady surge of smoke and sheets of white ash, burning cool and requiring minimal attention.

The maduro bursts out of the gate with a pleasant mix of sugar and spice, hints of chocolate and pepper.  The pre-light cherry notes evolve into a dark cherry on the burn, providing a sweet exhale that limits the spice in the first third despite the rush of flavor upon introduction. The Nicaraguan tobacco comes to shine in the second third, with mild spice lingering in the back of the throat and thick, clean and sweet cedar notes that eventually give way to more subdued flavors toward the middle. Through the finish, the Cabaiguan Maduro settles into a perfectly balanced cigar.

This collaboration between Don Pepin Garcia and Pete Johnson could be the most consistent maduro on the market; It has balanced flavors of sweet cocoa, black pepper, cedar and leather intonations. The mild strength of this cigar makes it enjoyable for smokers of all types. Get your hands on one at any of the three BCC location.
