Humidor 101
It doesn’t take long for a cigar-smoker to realize that it quickly becomes more than a hobby. At Broadway Cigar, we imagine it as a lifestyle. You light one up, and suddenly you’re eating every meal considering a pairing. You’re watching your favorite sports team, absent-mindedly reaching for a draw. Those that have come to accept this as fact, know that there are a few necessities to maintaining that lifestyle. Perhaps the most important of which is a humidor.
Humidors are essential for any enthusiast for a handful of reasons. The primary reason being that tobacco is a plant. (This shouldn’t be news). If you’re old enough to smoke you’re old enough to know that without watered roots, plants dry out. A humidor will keep your cigars from drying out. It will age your cigars at a room temperature while maintaining optimal humidity of around 68-72%. This allows cigar-lovers to buy in bulk, without sacrificing quality.

Because most humidors are made of wood, they also contribute flavor as the cigars age. Traditional cedar lining helps the humidification process, but if the case hasn’t been seasoned, it will actually remove moisture from the cigars. (This goes back to the drying out issue.) Similarly, storing too many cigars in one box will have a negative effect on the humidity level and it’s recommended that you keep your box half-full. On the bright side, a half-full humidor could never be considered half-empty.
