BCC Cigar Review: Dark Sumatra

The Dark Sumatra series from Hoyo de Monterrey is yet another in a line of powerful cigars. Blended by Estelo Padron, the five Honduran, Nicaraguan and Cuban tobaccos provide rich, robust flavors. This particular blend is fuller still than the original Hoyo de Monterrey sticks.

It is undeniably a well-constructed cigar. The deep Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper is easy on the eyes and stimulating in the mouth. It contributes complex flavors that meld with the Connecticut broadleaf binder. A sturdy parejo cigar, the Dark Sumatra has a clean and even burn. Although the draw off to a slow start, it gave the flavors a chance to warm up and really take hold.

After the initial setbacks, the flavors came full-force. Cedar, pepper and coffee were especially strong in the first half but quickly gave way to a lasting leathery end. Cigar Aficionado gave the stick an 87 rating and despite some minor drawbacks, we enjoyed the rounded flavors and satisfying experience.

Come to the lounge and try one for yourself.
